What incentive travel program leaders need to know

  • Third-party research gives planners a stronger foundation for incentive travel program strategy.
  • Evolving participant expectations inform the experiences people are genuinely motivated to earn.
  • Planners must get better at connecting experiences to lasting outcomes.

Mapping global incentive travel trends keeps sales and event leaders ahead of evolving attendee expectations.

ITA Group is a Champion sponsor of the 2026 Incentive Travel Index (ITI), which is a collaborative project of SITE and the Incentive Research Foundation.

I shared how 2026 industry findings relate to what we’re seeing from our corporate event clients as a panelist for a recent IMEX session discussing the report. I’ve recapped my top takeaways on:

  • Spending trends
  • Destination disruption
  • AI adoption
  • Industry evolution

1. Incentive trip investments trend toward elevating perceived value

ITI Report findings: Spend per person rose 7.8% in 2026, to a $5,500 average

ITA Group take: Costs continue to rise, so the real challenge is maintaining the perceived value of the reward and creating a seamless travel experience. Interestingly, we're not seeing increased spending on gifting or décor to achieve that goal.

Clients want investments that attendees actually feel and remember. Personalization is part of the equation. Collecting the right pre-trip data and allowing attendees more autonomy to choose their activities elevates the experience without adding cost.

Increased incentive trip spend

As organizational spend increases, we’re seeing clients spend more across experience categories:

  • Upgraded incentive trip destinations, like moving from Mexico to Europe
  • Higher-end hotel brands, choosing 5-star accommodations when 4-star was their norm
  • Improved air options, upgrading to premium economy or business class for longer-haul flights

When budgets are flat or under pressure, incentive trip sponsorship has become a powerful tool. Strategic partnerships can fund memorable experiences and excursions, like pool parties and dine-arounds, without requiring additional allocation.

Related: Targeted incentive trip sponsorship packages benefit attendees and brands at every phase.

2. Trusted partnerships mitigate incentive trip destination instability

ITI Report findings: When a destination hits the headlines for the wrong reason, relationships and experience help 77.5% of buyers regain confidence.

ITA Group take: The question isn't whether a destination is completely risk-free, because none are. It's whether a client can operate there safely and responsibly.

What we've found is that risk, both real and perceived, can change very quickly. A destination can move out of consideration almost overnight, but it can also recover much faster than people expect.

Leaders are looking for confidence, not perfection. My colleagues with risk mitigation expertise help them look beyond the headlines and focus on these safety signals.

Is the infrastructure functioning normally?

  • Airport operations
  • Transportation
  • Healthcare and emergency services

Are other groups successfully operating there?

Frequent internal debriefs and a record of program resilience inform our decision-making.

What are trusted partners telling us?

Local intelligence from destination experts (DMOs, DMCs, hotels) and security partners becomes incredibly valuable. Maintaining these relationships helps us sort out real from perceived risk.

Having strong destination partners and security resources allows clients to make informed decisions rather than reactive ones.

3. Incentive travel program ROI pressure requires strategic evolution

ITI Report findings: Program owners rate sales and profitability, as well as productivity, ahead of softer engagement goals.

ITA Group take: Simply defending rising trip costs won’t be the biggest long-term challenge for program leaders. They’ll need to go beyond trip satisfaction surveys and continually prove incentive program impact.

We advocate for a shift toward programs designed with clearer business objectives and measurement strategies in the initial “align” phase of ITA Group's year-round engagement framework.

Achieving stronger ROI starts with designing around specific business outcomes:

  • Sales growth
  • Performance improvement
  • Retention
  • Faster onboarding of newer sellers

ITA Group event analytics experts recommend comparing benchmark data to post-event measurements at multiple points. Reinforcing messaging about how participants are making an impact on the organization’s success in communications ties the experience to their hard work and amazing performance.

Evolving behind-the-scenes operations

In some areas, AI creates efficiency so our teams can focus on the work that has the biggest impact. We're using AI to make work faster and more informed in these areas:

  • Air operations: Helps with initial recommendations, quality checks and flagging exceptions
  • Registration: Answers common attendee questions instantly
  • Customer service: Faster responses and identification of recurring themes
  • Reporting: Connects data and generates insights more quickly

Our goal with emerging technology is enabling more time with clients and partners for:

  • Relationship building
  • Complex problem solving
  • Strategic decision making
  • Experience design

4. Incentive travel destination rankings need more context

ITI Report findings: Europe and the Caribbean are 2026's strongest-momentum destinations.

ITA Group take: Overall, the ITI Report incentive travel destination ranking feels consistent with the conversations we're having. Mexico, the Caribbean and Western Europe continue to be strong favorites due to their accessibility, infrastructure, familiarity and perceived value.

Asia-Pacific also stands out for us. As organizations look for fresh destinations and differentiated experiences, we're seeing more programs being planned there, with significant interest in:

  • Thailand
  • Vietnam
  • Japan
  • Fiji

Even though Hawaii has a lower ranking in the report, that doesn't necessarily mean demand is gone. Many incentive programs operate on destination rotations. Since we saw significant activity in Hawaii in 2022, 2023 and 2024, it's possible many organizations have simply rotated elsewhere for now and may return in future years.

Our 2026 ITI Report takeaway for future-proofing event strategy

The strongest takeaway from this year’s report? Planners must get better at connecting experiences to lasting outcomes.

We're operating in an environment where what worked a few years ago may not be as effective today. Budgets, risk levels and destination realities shift while expectations continue to rise.

Data and technology can help us adapt faster and prove value and ROI. But the report showed us that our industry challenge is creating truly meaningful business impact. Events that design around inspiring behavior change will be most successful, long term.
